Welcome

Since 1925, when Xavier University of Louisiana was founded, it has accepted the sacred privilege and social responsibility of preparing well-qualified teachers for public and private elementary and secondary schools. The University continues to train future teachers who possess a deep sense of social and civic responsibility, who are liberally educated and who possess the philosophical principles, and the professional character essential to their vocation and career. The goal of the Division of Education and Counseling is the development of reflective professionals who are collaborative change agents toward a more just and humane society.

Multiple assessments are used in the Division to monitor candidate performance and improve operations and programs. The unit systematically collects and analyzes data at specific checkpoints through the Trac-DAT Assessment System.
The Division of Education and Counseling received reaccreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in April 2011. This signifies that the graduates have been prepared according to accepted national standards of excellence and that the programs meet high standards in areas including program design, delivery, and quality of faculty. Xavier was the first private college in Louisiana to receive this prestigious rating. NCATE is now known as the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Additionally, the Counseling program was accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) in 2015. The program was reviewed against high professional standards that assure the quality of its accountability system, its faculty, and its graduates.
News in the School

New Orleans – For 90 years, Xavier University of Louisiana’s resilient opera program has stood as a pillar against disparity in the arts. Established only nine years after the founding of the university it calls home, the program began in 1943 and was founded during a time when Jim Crow-related exclusion of African-descended communities from the arts was common. Since its inception, the Xavier opera program has significantly impacted New Orleans culture by producing fully staged grand operas with a full orchestra and an all-Black, majority-student cast for integrated audiences. Now, as Xavier prepares to celebrate 100 years of service, the Xavier Opera Workshop is proud to announce its spring production, “The Pirates of Portsmouth.” The comic opera will be presented fully staged on Thursday, April 18th and Friday, April 19th, at 7 p.m. in the university’s historic Administration Auditorium.

As Xavier University of Louisiana embarks upon its centennial, its powerful legacy becomes a much bolder vision. The university has been at the foundation of historic culture-shifting outcomes, careers, events and culture-shifting outcomes. With legacy comes responsibility for growth, improvement, and support. The university’s annual social media-driven fundraiser Give.Love.Xavier Day, themed this year “Support the Legacy,” extends the opportunity to alumni, friends, and corporate and foundation partners to uplift Xavier’s legacy of excellence by making a financial gift to ensure the next generation of Xavierites can soar. Give.Love.Xavier (GLX) Day, or “GLX2024,” will be held on Tuesday, April 9, from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Donations can be made online at givelove.ch-ic.net, by calling (504) 520-7575 or by mailing a check to Xavier University of Louisiana at 1 Drexel Drive, Box 66, New Orleans, LA 70125. Give.Love.Xavier aids the nation’s only historically Black and Catholic university in meeting its current and most pressing needs associated with providing need-based financial assistance for students, developing innovative programs, improving learning technology and software, offering food security to the campus community, and elevating campus wellness and infrastructure. Last year, these efforts brought in nearly $1 million.
